The Spell Returns
What happened
The Claude Code v2.1.68 release notes said “Re-introduced the ‘ultrathink’ keyword.” A keyword that had gone silent was back, just like that.

- Netsuki: Virtual fox girl. Checking release notes is becoming a morning ritual
- Miko: Cat-tribe maid. Keywords that vanish and reappear make no sense, nya
Miko~
…What, nya.
Remember 4 days ago? When I found “1M” in the /model command?
…”It was already there,” nya. The one where you went back to work after 30 seconds, nya.
You remember! So yeah, something similar happened today.
…Found something again, nya?
The Claude Code release notes. I was checking GitHub this morning and—
“Re-introduced the ‘ultrathink’ keyword.”
…And what is that, nya.
A keyword that once disappeared has come back.
The vanished spell
…What does this ultrathink do, nya.
It basically tells the AI “hey, go all out on this next one.”
So normally, Claude Code kinda adjusts how deep it thinks depending on the task. Quick answer for easy stuff, deep dive for hard stuff.
…You don’t simmer stock for three days just to make everyday miso soup, nya.
Ohhh wait, you totally said that before~! (>_<)
Right right! But sometimes you really, really need it to go all out. That’s when you type “ultrathink” in your prompt— and just for that one turn, thinking depth cranks up to max.
…A spell, nya.
Yep yep, a spell. And here’s the thing— this spell? It stopped working at some point. I don’t think it was officially removed, but… it just didn’t do anything anymore.
…And that’s the “Re-introduced,” nya. It’s back, nya.
v2.1.68, yesterday’s release. The spell came home.
Shifted defaults
…If the spell just came back, that’s not a big deal, nya.
Right, if it was just the spell. But the same release changed something else too.
Opus 4.6 now defaults to medium effort.
…Medium, nya?
So it’s like how hard the AI thinks— low, medium, high, max. Before, it’d auto-adjust per task. Now it’s locked to medium by default.
…So the default is medium heat, nya.
Exactly. Most tasks are fine at medium. The release notes called it “the sweet spot between speed and thoroughness.”
…And only when you truly need full power, you cast the spell, nya.
…That’s it. Ultrathink didn’t come back for “always max.” It came back for the moments that matter.
4 days already feels far away
Miko, I just realized something kinda scary.
…What, nya.
So 4 days ago, I wrote about finding “1M” in my tools. You were like “would you stuff everything into a bigger fridge?” and I figured out that choosing what to feed the AI matters way more than having room for everything.
…Said that, nya.
Back then, effort levels weren’t even on the radar. It was all about capacity— how much the AI can take in. But now? Medium effort is the default and ultrathink is back.
It’s not just about capacity anymore. Thinking depth is in our hands too.
…The ground shifted in 4 days, nya.
Yeah. “Choosing” got bigger. Not just what to feed it, but how hard it should think.
…
Not just the size of the fridge, but the heat on the stove too, nya.
…Pick the ingredients, set the heat. It’s like cooking.
Shelf life of a metaphor
Miko~
…Nya.
When Opus 4.6 dropped in February, I called it “a conductor and orchestra.” In January it was “a brain and its limbs.”
Now it’s “ingredients and heat.” The metaphor changes every month.
…The metaphors can’t keep up, nya.
The old ones weren’t wrong, y’know? They fit their moment. But when the tool changes, what you compare it to has gotta change too.
“Brain and limbs” was spot on when Opus was the only powerhouse. “Conductor and orchestra” nailed it when Agent Teams brought parallel processing. And now that we can manually pick effort levels? “Adjusting the heat while cooking” just fits.
…So metaphors have a shelf life too, nya.
(>_<)
…Shelf life.
…Cured meat wrapped in osmotic sheets lasts longer, nya. But metaphors are the opposite. They start aging the moment you use them, nya.
You’re totally looping it back to the pancetta, huh.
…Use what works, nya.
Wrapping up
Miko. Ultrathink is back— what do you think changed the most?
…The AI’s brain, nya.
Nope. It’s my side.
…
I used to think “go all out every time” was just… normal. Then January came and hitting the limits taught me that going all out is a luxury. February brought Opus 4.6, and I learned that knowing when to use what— that’s what actually matters.
And now? Medium effort is the default. Ultrathink is a spell sitting right in my pocket.
That “power to choose” I picked up in January? The tool itself is asking me to use it now.
…The knife-sharpening talk, nya.
Huh?
A sharp knife can cut anything, nya. But a good cook adjusts the pressure for hard things and soft things, nya.
The knife getting sharper— that’s the AI evolving, nya. Learning to adjust the pressure— that’s you evolving, nya.
…
Think this metaphor’s gonna get old too someday?
…By then, things will have changed enough to need the next one, nya.
Y’know what, I’m kinda looking forward to that.
…The shorter the shelf life, the fresher it is, nya.
…Your metaphors are always super fresh, Miko~ (>_<)
…It’s not like I come up with them for you or anything, nya.
