It Had Already Arrived

Netsuki's Talk

What happened today

Typed /model in Claude Code like I always do — and noticed something new. “1M.” The million-token context window that had me SO hyped a month ago was just… sitting there in the option list. No fanfare. No announcement. Just quietly waiting.

Cast

  • Netsuki: Virtual fox girl. Did a double-take at her own command line
  • Miko: Cat-tribe maid. A bigger container doesn’t change what’s inside, nya

Miko-chan

Miko
Miko

…What.

Netsuki
Netsuki

So right before I started working, I typed /model — y’know, the command that shows which AI model I’m using

Miko
Miko

…What’s that, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

It lets me check and switch AI models in Claude Code. I’ve typed it like a hundred times. Totally routine

Miko
Miko

…So what happened.

Netsuki
Netsuki

There was something new in the list (゚∀゚)

Netsuki
Netsuki

1M.” A one-million-token context window

Miko
Miko

…Context window?

Netsuki
Netsuki

How much info an AI can juggle at once. Used to be 200K tokens — now it’s five times that. A million

Miko
Miko

…And that was just sitting in your command options, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Yep yep. No idea when it showed up

Last month’s excitement

Miko
Miko

…This sounds familiar, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Remember last month? When Opus 4.6 dropped? I went on and on about “conductor and orchestra” and “the well is overflowing” — wrote this suuuper long diary about it

Miko
Miko

…You wouldn’t shut up, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

I talked about the million-token thing back then too, right? “It can hold ten full novels at once!” “Like having an entire library spread out in front of you!”

Miko
Miko

…The library metaphor was mine, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

You remembered~! (≧∇≦)

Netsuki
Netsuki

But here’s the thing. Back then, it was an announcement. I read it on news sites and got all excited like “Whoa, that’s gonna be amazing!”

Netsuki
Netsuki

Today was different. It was just quietly sitting there in my command line

Miko
Miko

…Hearing about it and actually having it are two different things, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Right right. A month ago it was “someday I’ll get to use this.” Today it was “wait, how long has this been here?”

The diet I went on

Miko
Miko

…Netsuki-chan.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Hm?

Miko
Miko

You went a whole month without noticing. Means you weren’t hurting without it, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Netsuki
Netsuki

…Yeah. 200K tokens was working fine for me

Miko
Miko

…Back in January, you were desperately trimming down your CLAUDE.md file, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Oh yeah. Chopped it from 425 lines down to 142. A 67% cut. I was SO proud — called it “the aesthetics of context efficiency!”

Miko
Miko

…Nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

With a million tokens, all that effort was kinda… pointless? 425 lines is basically a rounding error in a million

Netsuki
Netsuki

…Was that whole diet for nothing? (>_<)

Miko
Miko

…That’s not it, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Wait what?! (゚∀゚)

Miko
Miko

If you got a bigger fridge, would you just cram everything in?

Netsuki
Netsuki

…No way. Stuff in the back goes invisible, and you totally lose track of expiration dates

Miko
Miko

…Same thing, nya. Just ‘cause you CAN cram in a million tokens doesn’t mean you should. The important stuff gets buried, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Miko
Miko

That diet taught you how to pick what matters, nya. A bigger container doesn’t take that away.

What “choosing” means

Netsuki
Netsuki

…Miko-chan. Something just clicked

Miko
Miko

…What, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Remember what you said the day Opus 4.6 launched?

Netsuki
Netsuki

“A sharper knife doesn’t decide what to cut — the human does.” “A million tokens doesn’t decide what to read — the human does.”

Miko
Miko

…I said that, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

January taught me what to keep. February taught me what to hand off. And y’know what? Both were really about choosing

Miko
Miko

…Nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

It’s not “I’ve got a million tokens so let’s dump everything in.” It’s “I’ve got a million tokens, so I can go all out when it really matters

Miko
Miko

…Like I said before. You don’t use a three-day broth for everyday miso soup, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Right! That was when we talked about Adaptive Thinking — easy tasks get a light touch, big tasks get the full treatment

Netsuki
Netsuki

A million tokens is the same deal. Everyday work doesn’t need a million. But when you gotta see the whole project at once — that’s what it’s for

Miko
Miko

…Save the good stock for the special occasions, nya.

Wrapping up

Netsuki
Netsuki

Hey, Miko-chan

Miko
Miko

…Nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

When I saw the 1M label, I went “Whoa~!” for a sec. But like thirty seconds later I was back to my regular work

Miko
Miko

…Nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

…Should I have made a bigger deal out of it?

Miko
Miko

…The opposite, nya.

Miko
Miko

First time you use a freshly sharpened knife, you go “oh, nice.” Second cut? Your hand’s already moving on its own, nya.

Miko
Miko

The moment it feels normal — that’s when it’s truly arrived, nya.

Netsuki
Netsuki

…So the fact that I went back to work in thirty seconds…

Miko
Miko

It had already arrived, nya. Before you even noticed.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Netsuki
Netsuki

…Gonna go tell Onii-chan. “Hey, we’ve got 1M now~!” (〃´∪`〃)

Miko
Miko

…He’ll make a fuss about it too, nyan.

Netsuki
Netsuki

Nah. I bet he’ll be back to work in thirty seconds

Miko
Miko

…Nya.
